Imagine if you have hidden trauma held in your body like I did that stops you from confronting situations that drain your energy. That stops you from creating the impact you want to make. That stops you from having the deeply connected relationships you desire.
There are many reasons I couldn’t stand up for myself in the past, and why I still struggle with it today. One big reason is that I really don’t want to hurt another person’s feelings.
Unfortunately, that often came at the detriment of my own health and wellbeing. I have definitely made progress on that where I recognize that I 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 ahead of someone else’s wants.
Another major contributor is the fact that I have religious roots that run through every fiber of my being…a religion where I was brainwashed into believing:
❌ “I’m not good enough.”
❌ “I’m not worthy of receiving good in my life.”
❌ “I’m not worthy of pleasure.”
Of course, I know those are not true logically, but my body that stores the trauma doesn’t agree. And we don’t yank out those roots, we allow them to disintegrate gently so we don’t cause more trauma.
I also hesitate to stand up for myself because I don’t want to confess my “sin” of fighting. It’s rooted in childhood where I had to confess my “sin” of fighting with my mom and sisters, when in reality what I was actually doing was 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟.
There were consequences for voicing my opinion or beliefs during my childhood and that is something I am learning how to do today. Allowing the emotions to flow as I try something new and different for me.
❓ How about you? During your childhood were you encouraged to share your opinions and beliefs about touchy situations?
As I have healed, I realize that religion took away 𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 to Something Greater leaving me very disempowered. Building that relationship with the Divine is a journey. A very worthwhile journey.

🎯 Recognizing that generational trauma will continue until we say “no, I’m not fine” when we really aren’t fine and 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬.
🎯 Releasing shame.
🎯 The common society norm that needs to go… that someone else has the right to have an opinion about you. They don’t have a right to their opinion about you…they might state their opinion about you, but it’s not a right they have.
🎯 The FACT that nobody else gets to tell you who you should be. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫.
